Ethernet provides more bandwidth and flexibility at lower costs than traditional dedicated and switched lines. This is why the telecommunications industry has chosen Ethernet for Next Generation Networks. These packet-oriented networks with carrier-grade reliability are ideal for offering multiplay services at reasonable cost.
The role of Ethernet in telecommunications is so important that nowadays it is not only a networking technology, but also a service interface. In other words, many carrier networks emulate Ethernet interfaces at the edges of their network, even if they do not use Ethernet for transport.
Carrier Ethernet has many useful application fields, for example layer-2 VPNs, dedicated and shared lines for businesses and mobile backhaul. In triple play applications for residential customers, Ethernet forms a part of the converged network, delivering voice, data and video services with Quality of Service (QoS).

|
Trend Communications announces Trend Multipro GbE, a modular tester for the installation and maintenance of Next Generation Networks. With the tester's Pluggable Interface Module (PIM) for Gigabit Ethernet, you can perform measurements at several testing points from the user premises to the core of the network.
Thanks to its modularity and versatility, Trend Multipro is one of the most cost-effective testers on the market. The tester's portability, rugged design and extended autonomy make it a very efficient field tool.
The main applications of this powerful tester are:
- Service Level Agreement (SLA) verification
- IPTV/VoIP troubleshooting
- Acceptance of network equipment

> Features and Benefits
|
|
|
Trend Multipro GbE is a dual-port tester for bidirectional in-service monitoring as well as out-of-service measurements. The tester has several different applications during network equipment acceptance, installation, bringing-into-service, monitoring and troubleshooting.
Some of the most powerful features of this tester are:
Multiple Stream Generation
Trend Multipro GbE can generate as many as 16 independent, simultaneous Ethernet traffic streams. This is useful in installation, bringing-into-service and other out-of-service tasks.
You can generate realistic traffic for all your testing needs during installation and bringing-into-service. Some of the traffic streams can be used as background data that may serve to emulate congestion. You can choose a particular traffic stream for detailled analysis of QoS as well as for other testing purposes.
Q-in-Q and MPLS
With Trend Multipro GbE, you can perform measurements on Q-in-Q frames in line with IEEE 802.1ad. This frame format is used to isolate the subscriber and service provider networks in carrier-class implementations. Thanks to the VLAN and Q-in-Q support of Trend Multipro, you can connect the tester to almost any point in your Ethernet network.
The tester supports double-labelled frames, which makes it compatible with pseudowires, and it can also analyse applications based on VPLS.
...and more:
- Statistics and error reporting for all network layers
- VoIP and IPTV testing options
- SLA acceptance with latency, jitter and packet loss statistics
- Ping and trace route for end-to-end connectivity testing
- Field-replaceable SFP interfaces
- Multiple technologies and modular design
- Bidirectional monitoring by means of dual optical and electrical ports
- Cable diagnostics for copper and fibre
- Programmable analysis filters
- Multilayer BER tests
- Remote L2 and L3 loop-back testing
- VLAN priority bits in line with IEEE 802.1p

Carrier Ethernet Acceptance and Bringing-into-Service
Trend Multipro GbE is a powerful tool for the installation and bringing-into-service of Ethernet network equipment and optical/electrical links.
Copper length, impedance, wire connection faults or optical power and continuity these are just some of the parameters that you can measure with Trend Multipro GbE. You can also perform BER tests on both optical and electrical interfaces.

The RFC 2544 measurements included in Trend Multipro GbE are intended for benchmarking and commissioning network equipment by means of combined throughput, latency, frame loss and other parameters.
Triple Play Testing
Trend Multipro GbE supports IP Television, Telephony and Data service testing over optical and electrical Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet interfaces. These Triple Play testing features enable you to check the SIP signalling of a VoIP call, measure the connection speed when accessing to a remote HTTP server, or preview an MPEG-encoded video signal.

You can perform these measurements directly from the customer premises, as well as from the DSLAM or IP/MPLS core. You can even make measurements on the local loop, thanks to the PIMs specialised in testing the access network.
QoS Verification
Shaping, policing, priority scheduling and resource management protect your network against congestion, enabling custom QoS provisioning.

With Trend Multipro GbE you can generate up to 16 simultaneous traffic flows with custom bandwidth profiles and Class of Service (CoS) marks, and measure delay, jitter, packet loss and other performance parameters on these flows. This enables you to check the Connection Admission Control (CAC) for ingress traffic and see that the resource reservation and release mechanisms work as expected.

> Market Segmentation and Positioning
|
|
|
Trend Multipro GbE is the best choice for testing metropolitan networks and Ethernet-based backbone networks.
The tester can combine pure Gigabit Ethernet tests with application-layer tests such as VoIP, IPTV or Data. This is an interesting feature that increases the value of this tester in all market segments, including large Enterprise networks.
Modularity is another feature that adds value to this product. By combining the tester's ADSL/VDSL modules with the Ethernet module you can perform the same tests at both aggregate and tributary interfaces in an Ethernet DSLAM.

The addressable market of Trend Multipro GbE can be divided into two main areas:
- Ethernet to the Business: Addresses the needs of enterprises for high-speed Internet access and interconnection of multiple sites. Businesses have stringent requirements for availability, QoS and security.
- Ethernet to the Subscriber: Addresses the needs of home offices and residential subscribers. These networks offer triple play services, i.e. voice, video, and data delivery. In this market, Ethernet is usually found in the metropolitan network, but it can be used in some FTTx loops as well.
