he telecom network industry is moving towards all-IP networks, in a converged broadband network architecture that supports bundled audio, video and data services. These services are commonly known as triple play.
Triple play is not a technology, nor is it based on a common standard. It is a new, combined business model that is changing the dynamics of the telecommunications service provider market. The market is more heterogeneous now and there are many new players, for example cable TV companies and Internet service providers.
Customers are also starting to expect rich multimedia content instead of "just" TV, Internet or telephone services. There is an increasing demand in the market for Video on Demand (VoD), digital TV, high-speed Internet and Voice over IP (VoIP) services.
Fierce competition, customer expectations for high-quality services, and new business models are big challenges for triple play service providers. Besides business challenges, service providers also need to address some technological issues.
One of the biggest technological challenges of triple play is how to deliver the Quality of Service (QoS) expected. How to make the service efficient enough to keep existing customers happy and attract new ones?
At Trend we have addressed this and several other technical issues as well. This is why we created Trend Multipro, our solution for the deployment and bringing-into-service of triple play applications.

MAIDENHEAD (U.K.), September 3.
Trend Multipro is a compact and efficient service-oriented test platform for converged networks.
Trend Multipro is an efficient tool for service qualification and troubleshooting.
The tester ensures correct end-to-end operation of converged networks by testing the service performance as it is experienced by the customer.
Provider networks, customer equipment, as well as media coding and transport are all thoroughly analysed and tested.
Trend Multipro has a modular design, supporting several different technologies. The launch application of this tester is triple play, including Pluggable Interface Modules (PIMs) for data, VoIP and IPTV/video testing.

Trend Multipro Data for Internet and Broadband Access Testing
Trend Multipro Data verifies the copper link between the customer premises and the DSLAM.
The tester includes a browser that enables you to view web pages, and thanks to the built-in FTP client, uploading or downloading files is really easy.
The field-replaceable modules of this tester make it quick and easy to test different technologies, such as ADSL2+ or VDSL2.

Trend Multipro Video for VoD
and IPTV Quality of Experience
IP video installers need to know immediately if the service is working correctly for a given customer or not. Trend Multipro adds the most innovative service-oriented test and measurement features to meet the needs of today’s technicians.
Trend Multipro Video is the only tester on the market that displays the video signal directly on screen, the same way as it is seen by the customer. This way, the technician can visually check any image impairments and isolate the problem immediately.

Trend Multipro VoIP for Voice Quality Testing
Trend Multipro VoIP efficiently checks the QoS and performance of VoIP networks and voice encoders.
The tester guarantees effective signalling, thus making the IP telephony business more profitable.

 QoS in Triple Play Networks

|
UNTERSCHLEIßHEIM (Germany), August 29. One of the biggest technological challenges of triple play is Quality of Service (QoS).
Triple play services are a commodity, which is one of the reasons why consumers expect 100% Quality of Service (QoS) from these services. This has made triple play QoS delivery a competitive necessity for service providers.
The problem of delivering QoS in triple play packet networks can be compared with water distribution.
Light Load
Let us imagine that there are two towns, A and Z, and two water pumps supplying water to these towns; one pump per town.
There are some leaks in the pipelines, so some water is lost between the pumps and the towns. This situation can be controlled quite easily while the use of the pipelines is low. However, things may change if the demand for water increases.
Heavy Load
Let us suppose that there is a third town, M, that also needs water.
A new pump could supply water to Town M, but if you pump more water into a leaking pipeline, you will, naturally, lose more water. Result: There may not be enough water for all three towns.

Over-Provisioning
The water company can solve the problem by installing yet another pump. (With 4 pumps for three towns, the ratio between water pumps and serviced towns is now 1.33 pumps/town.)
|
Now, much more water is lost, but at least all three towns get the water they need.
While this solution may be OK for three towns, what happens if the company suddenly needs to deliver water to a fourth town? Should they install yet another pump and lose even more water?
Probably not, because there is a better solution.
Fixing the Pipeline
Fixing the pipeline is a good alternative to over-provisioning.
While fixing may be more expensive than over-provisioning, it is a more "scalable" solution.
Two pumps can easily deliver water to three towns (0.66 pumps/town), and no water is lost.

Fixing the Network
Using traffic engineering (Multi-Protocol Label Switching, MPLS) will indirectly help quality of service, because it improves routing performance.
MPLS is also compatible with most networking technologies and protocols, so incompatibilities will not be causing any problems, either.
Resource Reservation (IntServ) guarantees end-to-end QoS in terms of bandwidth, delay and packet loss.
Differentiated Routing (DiffServ) may also be used. Here, edge routers will classify packets into priority classes.
